At Turf Gallery, Keeley Road, Croydon
Croydon – to many the name conjures up images of concrete, a jungle of architecture and noise. What isn’t part of the mental picture are the green spaces – from the formal Queen’s Gardens to the places which, often despite our best efforts, nature has prevailed. Along the edges of pavements, through the cracks in the paving slabs, the green of hardy little plants is visible. They push up from the small patches of soil in which the seeds have established themselves, seeds which have been blown on the wind or carried in the digestive tracts or birds and mammals.
In collaboration with Croydon School of Art, Turf has been hosting CSoA BA Fine Art graduate Catherine Stephenson as artist in residence at the gallery space during July and August, culminating in this week-long exhibition. Catherine has been continuing her major project ‘Street Trails’, embarking on a journey of exploration and discovery to unearth Croydon’s hidden secrets.
The exhibition and events were made possible with the generous support of the Arts Council England & Centrale Shopping Centre, Croydon.
