Release: 9th March 2021

Showing @ Turf: 19th – 29th May 2021

“Something that I think is really unique about Croydon’s identity is it’s sort of status in relation to London… it almost feels like a kind of city in itself.”

Art Press has been commissioned by Historic England to make a film about the future of Croydon’s high street, as part of Historic England’s High Streets Heritage Action Zone initiative.

We’ve been working with local filmmaker Araba Aduah to discuss what we don’t like about the town centre, what we do, and what we want to see in the future. We’ve discussed our experiences and memories of the high street, and experimented with filming, audio work, and illustration to make our final film.

“We’ve been talking about what we want the future of the high street to look like. We want more green space and community space, and less decisions made about us, without us.”

Art Press are a collective of 20 young creatives (age 14-21) who have been working with Turf in monthly free workshops. Since 2017 young people that make up Art Press have designed their own programme by choosing which artists to meet, what processes to try, and how to showcase their work. Art Press opens up opportunities for young people to select the artists and designers they want to work with, and ‘hands over the keys’ so they can design their own workshop series.
