We’re thrilled to be part of Art On Our Doorstep, Croydon’s contemporary art fair, helping to showcase and celebrate the creative talent across the borough, by opening all four floors of our unit in the Whitgift Centre for a special open studios event. Alongside our free gallery space, you can explore the working creative studios of more than 40 artists based at Turf. You can even drop in on some free creative activities hosted by our studio artists throughout the building.
Our current exhibition, ‘Tending’, is also open, showing the work of four contemporary artists and offering a space to rest and reflect on ideas of care and connection with the environments we share.
Join us for the following drop-in workshops and demonstrations as part of the Sunday programme!
Workshop: Mother Run by Anita Wadsworth
Come and make patterns, rest and chat as we make an art work together using 800 hand
knitted purses. All of the purses are empty, to fill with stories, not money. Suitable for all ages, drop in, stay as long as you like.
Project Space (first floor), drop in Sunday 11-1
Workshop: Visual storytelling honouring ancestors run by Salina Jane
Salina will be enabling participants to share memories of their ancestors, particularly their grandmothers, through drawing, imagery and words. You’ll learn some new skills to express yourself. Come make art in an artist’s studio, play with colour and have fun. No special skills required, only an interest in storytelling and a willingness to explore new approaches. All materials provided.
Studio W01 (basement), drop in 12.30 to 2.30pm on a first come basis
Workshop: Tracing with Light run by Marco Riosa
During this workshop you will be introduced to projection mapping with a live demo, followed by a brief Q&A and some time to participate. Projection mapping is a technique which involves using a projector and software to map out or trace irregular objects and applying imagery or video onto the object/surface.
Project Space (first floor), 2-3pm on a first come basis
ABOUT ART ON OUR DOORSTEP:
For one weekend, the Whitgift Centre becomes a gallery showcasing contemporary artists with a Croydon connection.
In partnership with Turf Projects, the shopping centre will see a curated exhibition of contemporary artists selected from an open call, alongside work from local young people and community creators.
A highlight of the weekend will be the reveal of the Croydon Masterpiece, a new artwork created with local residents by artist Rachel Gadsden. Visitors of all ages can also enjoy hands‑on activities and creative workshops throughout the event.
The Whitgift Centre is also home to reproductions of iconic paintings by Rousseau, Picasso and Renoir as part of The National Gallery: Art On Your Doorstep. Running until 5 July 2026, it’s a unique opportunity to see 30 paintings from the collection reproduced in locations across the borough.
KEY ACCESS INFO:
The studios at Turf are spread across four floors, two of which are regrettably not step-free. To help us support you best, please let us know of any access needs by emailing info@turf-projects.com.
