What processes and considerations go into creating the permanent artworks we see around us in public spaces?

Within a context of constantly shifting urban environments, how can such commissions be best approached in a way that is mindful of histories of the location and the desires of existing communities? And what are the practical considerations around developing robust and long-lasting artworks in public spaces?

In this open discussion with art consultant Belinda Holden and local authority placemaking project officer Kate Riggs, we will look at the ins and outs of making public-facing artworks that are built to last and working with funders, collaborators, and audiences involved in such projects.

Groundwerk is a monthly series of free practical workshops for artists and creatives wishing to gain the skills to support their practice.

This workshop is free to attend and open to all but booking is recommended, as spaces are limited.

Belinda Holden of T projects Uk is an arts and culture consultant specialising in integrating creative temporary programming and permanent public art into complex built environments, places and spaces. Belinda is also the Exectutive Administrator for the newly launched Yinka Shonibare Foundation.

// ABOUT KATE RIGGS

Kate is part of the Placemaking team at Croydon Council which has recently gained recognition for innovative approaches to planning, design and regeneration, including the NLA Meanwhile Award for the Meanwhile Croydon programme, and a Planning Award for Planning for Increased Housing Delivery for the Suburban Design Guide SPD. Kate studied architecture at RMIT University in Melbourne and has worked in private architectural practice, exhibition and event programming and curation.
