These works are an exploration of feelings, as sensations that can sometimes be beyond words. Feelings that can bring hope, warmth, love and grounding as well as fear, overwhelm, despair and disdain. Through writing, printmaking, ceramics, painting and drawing, Asha works through these inner emotional states. Attempts to suppress, avoid and deny these feelings can cause a negative impact to mental health, so art making can be a means of working through them in acceptance. Through making, Asha aims to connect to inner processes that are unconscious and automatic, conjuring ancestral knowledge from those who came before. The work reflects her lived experience with mental health, both personal and as a person who works in the field.

Reminders you’re not alone:

In ‘Sonny’s Blues’, James Baldwin writes;

‘Sonny’s fingers filled the air with life, his life. But that life contained so many others. It was gone into the air and had become part of the life around them. The people in the room were taking this life in, and the narrator realized that Sonny was not just playing for himself, but for all of them. The music was an expression of Sonny’s suffering and his struggle to overcome it, and the narrator finally understood and appreciated the depth of his brother’s experiences.’

In ‘Parable of the Sower’, Octavia Butler writes;

‘The world is full of painful stories. Sometimes it seems as though there aren’t any other kind and yet I found myself thinking how beautiful that glint of water was through the trees.’
