Reading & Writing Workshop // Jellyfish thinking, feeling, being

Sat 14 April, 11am – 3:30pm // At Turf // Free & open to all

BOOK >

As part of her exhibition at Turf Projects, artist Bryony Gillard will lead a reading & writing workshop exploring relationships between peripheral landscapes, female experience, sexuality and creativity.

The exhibition ‘A cap, like water, transparent, fluid yet with definite body, draws on the writings of the Modernist poet H.D and her experiences of psychic breakdown and creative and sexual awakening on the Isles of Scilly in the early 20th Century. During this time of retreat, she had what she referred to as her ‘jelly-fish experience’ — a state of autonomous sexuality and creativity described through the metaphor of a jellyfish; tentacled connections between female erotic body and mind.

Reading workshop // 11am – 12:30pm

Join us for a reading workshop led by artist Bryony Gillard, looking at texts which have inspired the exhibition ‘a cap, like water, transparent, fluid yet with definite body’. Short texts by the following writers H.D, Elizabeth R Johnson, Lila M. Harper, Donna J. Haraway, and Karan Barad can be downloaded here. We will be reading & discussing the texts together in the workshop.

Lunch // 12:30 – 1:30pm

Please bring your own lunch. Tea & coffee will be provided

Writing workshop // 1:30 – 3:30pm

Through a series of performative exercises, we will collectively explore what our own jelly-fish experiences might be, and how we might use the spaces between poetry, prose, improvisation and autobiography to translate experiences that exist beyond the visible or thinkable.

This workshop is aimed at people identifying as female or non-binary who have an interest in writing and performance — no previous experience of the subject is necessary.
