SAT 25 JAN 2:30-4pm // FREE & OPEN TO ALL

Listen to the audio recording of this session below

In this practical workshop, led by artist Erin Hughes, learn about the history and processes of paper marbling – a method of producing surface patterns that resemble marble and other types of stone. Find out about how different techniques have been developed around the world, with a focus on Turkish, Japanese, and European practices. Together, we will explore a range of different approaches for making our own marbled papers, from ‘nonpareil’ marbling, to creating natural stone effects and diffusions of colour, to experimenting with our own freestyle effects.

Groundwerk is a monthly series of free practical workshops for artists and creatives wishing to gain the skills to support their practice.

This workshop is free to attend and open to all but booking is recommended, as spaces are limited.

// ABOUT ERIN HUGHES

Erin Hughes is an artist living and working in mid-Wales. She creates hundreds of her own hand-marbled papers which she uses as her palette to construct collages that emulate the traditional craft of Pietre Dure. The source-image of her recent work is often selected from the first page of a Google image search result. Rendering these quickly sourced images with a slow, hand-made process gives a curious redemptive quality. Following her interest in craft within a contemporary art context, Erin sees making processes as a combative approach, a way of having a direct relationship to the world around us.

Erin Hughes completed her BA in Fine art from the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford 2012 and completed her MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art, London 2018. Recent exhibitions include; Adazzel, JGM Gallery, 2020, (solo) Hoot Hoot, Hoot Hoot, Lady Margaret Hall Library, Oxford, 2019; Bounds, Skelf.org.uk, 2019; A Raw Garden, Fitzrovia Gallery, 2019; Hidden, Mid-Wales Arts Centre, 2019; Size Matters; Fringe Arts Bath, 2019; Trans- Form, Mint Gallery, London, 2018; FAKERS, Thames-Side Studios Gallery, London 2018; Paper Cuts, Saatchi Gallery, London, 2018; Floored, Glass Cloud Gallery, 2018; Home Me 3, Cypher Billboard, London 2017; Mud, Tokyo and Swimming, imlabor, Tokyo, 2017.
